Sorey (スレイ Surei?) is a main character and the lead protagonist in Tales of Zestiria. He is a human raised by the Seraphim of Elysia. Because of his upbringing, he comes to possess high levels of resonance, allowing him to interact with the Seraphim. He grew up studying ruins with his sole childhood friend, Mikleo. One day, he and Mikleo explore one of the Elysium's abandoned old ruins mentioned in the book known as the Celestial Records, and whilst searching for ancient relics of the past Shepherds, powerful exorcists said to be extinct from the present timeline, he encounters a mysterious girl later revealing herself as Alisha Diphda, who invites him to the world outside of his secluded hometown.

When Sorey enters the capital city of Ladylake, he comes into contact with a seraphim of fire, Lailah, who forms a pacts with him which grants him the powers of a figure appearing ancient folktales, the Shepherd. After forming the pact, he gains the power to quell the beasts roaming across the world known as hellions and encounters multiple humans and members of the seraphim tribe to quell the evil spread around the world.

INTRODUCTION:

Sorey is a human youth who grew up among the “seraphim” (tenzoku), spiritual beings not visible to humans.

Sorey believes in the folklore that says “long ago, every human was able to see the seraphim” and dreams of unraveling the ancient mystery to make the world a place where people and seraphim can live together in peace.

One day, Sorey visits the human capital for the very first time. He becomes embroiled in an incident during which he pulls out a holy sword imbedded in a rock and ends up becoming a “Shepherd,” one who casts away calamity from the world.

He begins to realize the gravity of his mission, and his dream of coexistence between mankind and the seraphim becomes more intense—

And thus, the Shepherd embarks on an amazing journey with his companions.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Sorey is a young man who has brown hair and green eyes. He wears a long-sleeved blue shirt, baggy black-brown pants, white boots with yellow headers, a regular glove on his right hand and a Shepherd's artifact glove on his left. This all resembles the clothing of the Exorcist's from the past lore. He also wears a brown belt buckle, yellow feather earrings, feather attachments on his glove, practice sword and finally on his Shepherd's robe given to him by Alisha Diphda.

Personality[]

Sorey is a cheerful and boisterous character. He shows an interest in ruins, being able to talk for a considerably long time about one artifact as evident with his conversations with Mikleo. Living in Elysia has made it so that he had been able to see the seraphim by raising him spiritual resonance. He is very mature, like Mikleo, but can act very unreasonable in dangerous situations. When related to Mikleo, as a childhood friend, he can be protective such as when the topic relates to Sorey using Mikleo's powers or endangering him.

Story[]

Tales of Zestiria the X takes place in a world where there are beings called Seraphim. Humans and Seraphim used to live together in harmony thousands of years ago. The humans prayed to the Seraphim, and in return the Seraphim blessed them. The Seraphim have magical powers and their own element to control. Earth, wind, water, or fire. There were thousands of Seraphim, but mankind was awash with terrible emotions, and could easily be overcome and turn into monsters. When Seraphim became too connected to a human, seeing their friend physically and mentally turn into a monster caused them to despair and their ephemeral forms were quickly turned into monsters as well. The monsters were created when an area was thick with negative emotions that created a dangerous byproduct called malevolence. Malevolence turns any weak or negative living creature into a monster. While Seraphim are turned into powerful dragons, all other living creatures are turned into monsters called Hellions when they are taken over by malevolence.

The Seraphim kept nature running smoothly and in balance, while a person called the Shepherd kept the malevolence at bay. The Shepherd is a regular person until they are able to pull a sacred sword from a stone. Then they become a living legend with the power to purify all Hellions. They can form contracts with Seraphim and combine their bodies so they can use their elemental powers to purify dangerous creatures. They can also form contracts with humans, who help carry the burden of malevolence. While forming contracts with Seraphim has no adverse consequences, humans are a different story. Should the Shepherd die, so will the humans that have a contract with him or her. Also, the more humans the Shepard has contracts with, the heavier the burden on the Shepherd. They can weigh him or her down and cause problems if there are too many.

All of this is a simple legend, of course, no one's seen a Shepherd or Seraphim in hundreds of years. The legend says, humans became too self-absorbed and malevolent and therefore lost the ability to see a Seraphim's ephemeral form. That all changes when a certain princess stumbles across a young man who's lived in a Seraphim village his entire life and can see, touch and talk to them just as easily as he does humans. He has a dream to create a world in which Seraphim and humans can coexist again, but he doesn't have the power to act on his desires. The world is falling into darkness and the malevolence that the humans are blissfully unaware of is dangerously close to destroying everyone. How will the princess and her new optimistic friend fair in this world of monsters and mayhem?

FUNCTION

-Only the characters Sorey and Rose can perform armatization, which fuses either of them with a chosen seraph partner to produce a powerful hybrid form called the armatus. This form can perform hidden and seraphic artes indicative of the element the seraph represents and loses access to martial artes. While in this form, the stats for the human and seraph characters are combined, and they gain special abilities unique to the fusion: the character can wield a large sword and employ fire-based magic (Lailah), shoot water arrows using a bow (Mikleo), use stone fists and summon stone pillars (Edna), or gain blade-like wings and summon whirlwinds (Dezel/Zaveid).

-A character can swap out their seraph partners while not in this form, and both characters capable of armatization can be in this form at the same time. If the human character is knocked out, activating armatization will resurrect them if their current seraph partner is still active. When the fusion ends, the combined form's BG is split evenly between the participants.

Other Appearances[]

Talesofzestiriaanime

Sorey appears as the nexus of the exoflected Glenwood who meets Ix and Mileena when saving them from a monster attack. After having the situation explained to him, Sorey agrees to help the party locate and destroy a shimmera glass. Along the way, Sorey is excited to marvel at various ruins he had only read about even though some of them are different ones mixed together. He also picks up on Ix’s suspicions that Sorey might secretly resent them for taking him away from his home. The Shepherd quickly dispels their worries by his optimistic outlook at having a whole new world to explore and the satisfaction knowing his original self is still continuing his journey.

After Lailah and the other seraphs reunite with the party, they begin to ponder the possibility of reacquiring Armatization with an Overray mirrage. Although Sorey and Mikleo discover the catalyst for their Armatus, they have difficulty maintaining it for more than a few seconds. Aster, who had been observing them, then offers a spirit ring that stabilizes the fusion. Later on after more research is put into the spirit ring, Aster theorizes the combined Armatization of all four main elemental seraphim, the same one that appears in Tales of Zestiria the X.

As a nexus, Sorey’s emotions and memories influenced the exoflection of his world. Because of his high resonance and growing up seeing seraphim, he felt those experiences as normal which resulted in seraphim and hellions being visible to everyone in Tir Na Nog.

When not in the active party, Sorey enjoys exploring ruins with Mikleo and they even form a club out of it. They also become students under Raine who happily endorses their activities learning the histories of other worlds.

Trivia[]

  • Sorey's name is based off of the middle-eastern render of the name Solomon.
  • It has been revealed that Mikleo always cuts Sorey's hair for him.
  • Sorey shares the same colour palette as Eleanor Hume from Tales of Berseria.
